De Beers
De Beers, the world's largest diamond mining company (open-cast,
underground, alluvial, coastal and marine), produces approximately 40% (by
value) of the world's rough diamonds from its own mines in South Africa;
and, (in partnership with individual governments) in Botswana, Namibia,
and Tanzania. De Beers markets the rough from the Debswana mines in
Botswana, Namdeb in Namibia, the Mwadui mine in Tanzania, and the De Beers
Consolidated Mines in South Africa. |

London is the
headquarters of the DTC (the Diamond Trading Company. The DTC is the part
of the De Beers Group responsible for sorting the rough diamonds (from all
over the world) into some 16,000 categories (shape, size, quality and
color); valuation; and, then, marketing and sales of the rough diamonds to
their sightholder clients.

Sightholders
Sightholders, both manufacturers (of polished) and dealers (in
rough), meet once every 5 weeks, 10 times a year, to inspect their diamond
allocations in the London offices of De Beers at 17 Charterhouse Street. Payment
for the "sight" is in advance of the delivery of the rough to the
sightholder

Basically, in the industry, this has
always been thought of as a privileged select group of diamantaires who have
the opportunity of buying directly at the source, therefore receiving a steady
supply of rough for their factories.
Today, there are approximately 120 in number - best described as an eclectic
group of businessmen as there are no women included in the group - the
majority of whom are from the important diamond cutting centers worldwide.
Quite a number of "sons of" have continued the tradition taking over
from their fathers, and a number of new sightholders have been added in recent
years, including those specifically in the fancies category of rough. |
